CT exams can be challenging for patients who are anxious about the diagnosis or the procedure itself. Stressed patients are less likely to comply with staff instructions and are more likely to move. This may negatively affect image quality and interrupts workflow. Rescans waste time and can aggravate the situation. Philips scientists developed Ambient Experience to help suppress the physiological response to stress by creating a soothing care environment.
Strategies for improved patient satisfaction
Ambient Experience solutions provide patients with active relaxation and positive distraction options to create a welcoming and relaxing multi-sensorial CT experience. Patients can personalize the room's lighting, video and sound by selecting a theme of their choice. Upon selection, a themed movie is displayed on the wall and the ceiling for the patient in the bore to see – helping guide and relax them during the examination.
Enhancing the work environment for staff
Non-compliant CT patients complicate and slow the process. When patients struggle to relax, staff struggle to perform optimally, even for a short CT exam. Anxious patients who are calmed by active relaxation techniques help improve patient/staff interaction, resulting in a more positive CT experience. When exams conclude quickly and successfully, staff satisfaction and efficiency improve. Ambient Experience addresses both the physical and emotional needs of patients and staff.

Patients can personalize lighting, video and sound, creating a soothing ambiance with dynamic elements. Ceiling displays extend these themes to assist during exams. A 2020 survey showed 83% of respondents found Ambient Experience effective in reducing anxiety1.
Compared to other countries, clinical care in Japan is cold and impersonal. I’m looking for new approaches to improving care by improving the clinical environment.
